People often ask me if paddleboarding is an activity for kids. The short answer is yes, but sensibly. As an instructor, I've seen six-year-olds have the time of their lives and ten-year-olds get frustrated in five minutes. The difference isn't age: it's preparation, spot and expectations.
From what age?
At Isobaras we take kids from age 6, always with a flotation vest and in small groups. At that age balance is developed enough to stand on a large, stable board. The important thing isn't that they're experts, but that they listen and can swim confidently.
Choose a calm spot
For families we like Rincón de la Victoria. The water is usually more sheltered than at other Málaga beaches, there's space to move without stress, and if the group is comfortable we can do a short coastal route. In Málaga city is also possible, but we depend more on the day's conditions.
What to bring and what not to
- Swimsuit and short-sleeve T-shirt: we provide the wetsuit or vest if needed.
- Water-resistant sunscreen: it reflects off the sea and you burn more than you think.
- Willingness to share: paddleboarding is great for couples and families, not for competing.
Camps and groups
If your child enjoys it, summer camps are the natural next step. They mix paddleboarding, surf and beach games, always with certified instructors and small ratios. Many kids who start with one paddle lesson end the summer asking to come back.
If you're unsure whether your child is ready, message us. We look at age, sea conditions and group size to recommend the best option. We aren't selling an activity: we want the day on the water to be safe, fun and memorable.
